Cooling Solutions for Your Home | Best Fans & Air Conditioners at Irwins Megastore

Stay comfortable this Summer with our best range of fans and air conditioners. Whether you are working from home, relaxing in the living room or trying to get a good night's sleep, the correct fan can make all the difference. From desktop fans, to an air conditioning unit, to a pedestal fan, we have got you covered.

Desktop Fans

Desktop fans provide a stream of focused cool air for specific areas, making it ideal for workspaces. As desktop fans are portable, you can carry it around and change its location easily without the stress of heavy lifting. Desktop fans are also budget friendly as they use less energy than air conditioners or larger fans, reducing energy bills and environmental impact. They’re ideal for workspaces, as they help reduce stagnant air, creating a more comfortable environment that can enhance focus and productivity. They have a simple functionality with only a few buttons that control the speed, an oscillating function which allows rotation and an option to adjust the fan head to direct the cool air to where it's needed.

Pedestal Fan

A pedestal fan is a free-standing fan with adjustable height and tilt, allowing you to customise airflow to suit your needs. It's ideal for cooling larger spaces and is easy to move around, due to its lightweight design—especially when compared to air conditioners. Pedestal fans are also simple to use, featuring basic controls for fan speed and an oscillating function that distributes air by rotating the fan from side to side. They are also cost effective and easy to maintain so it can withstand the hot summer months. To increase its effectiveness, it should be placed near a window to circulate the cool breeze around the room.

Air Conditioner

Air conditioners not only cool the air but also help filter out dust, pollen, and other allergens—making them a great option for those who suffer from hay fever or asthma, especially during allergy season. They also help prevent mould growth by removing excess moisture from the air. While air conditioners are a bit more heavy-duty than pedestal or desktop fans, they actively lower the temperature of a room rather than just circulating air. Most models are mobile and easy to install, eliminating the need for professional assistance. However, they do consume more energy than cooling fans due to their higher cooling capacity, and they can be slightly noisier because of the compressor and fan working together.

How does it Work?

A portable room air conditioner works by pulling warm air from the room into the unit. The air first passes through a filter to remove dust and particles. It then moves over cold coils filled with refrigerant, which absorbs the heat and cools the air.

The refrigerant, now heated, goes to a compressor and then through another set of coils that release the heat outside. A fan helps push this hot air out. Once cooled, the refrigerant returns to start the process again.

The cool air is then blown back into the room, and this cycle continues until the room reaches the set temperature on the thermostat.

Air Cooler

An air cooler provides a more powerful and efficient airflow than an ordinary fan. You don't need to drill any holes or be near any windows for the exhaust hose. Most air coolers have water tanks that need to be refilled regularly to maintain efficient cooling. The air cooler sucks in warm air and uses its humidified pad to absorb the heat and moisture that evaporates in the pad, which cools the air. The air cooler then blows out the humidified air, whereas the air conditioner blows out dry air.

Ways to Optimise a Cooling Fan

  • Clean the fan regularly to prevent dust build-up, which can obstruct airflow and reduce its efficiency.
  • Face the fan near a window to draw in more cool air.
  • Put a bowl of ice in front of the fan to make the air colder.
  • Place on an elevated surface to maximise cooling.
  • Use during the hottest hours of the day to save energy.
  • Direct the air slightly upward to create better circulation and reduce hot pockets.
  • Pair with a dehumidifier as high humidity can make the air feel warmer.

Ways to Optimise a Portable Air Conditioning Unit

  • Close windows and doors to prevent the cold air escaping.
  • Ensure it is vented correctly, it should vent outside only.
  • Clean or replace the filter every 2-4 weeks as dust build-up can decrease airflow.
  • Keep it in a shaded area of the room as direct sunlight, will make it work harder, increasing energy use.
  • Turn the AC on before the hottest hours of the day as it is better to maintain a cooler temperature than to lower it rapidly.
