Most portable radios treat AM as an afterthought. Sangean does not: the PR-D4 uses AM Auto Tracking to optimise sensitivity as conditions change, which is why these radios have a following among people who actually listen to AM. Add a 3-inch full-range driver, a backlit LCD you can read across the kitchen, dual alarms with snooze and sleep, and the choice of mains or four D cells, and it works as a bedside clock radio and a kitchen radio at once.
AM Auto Tracking
The tuner continuously optimises AM sensitivity and reception quality rather than holding one fixed setting. On a weak or drifting AM signal that is the difference between listenable and not.
Digital tuning with presets
Digital tuning rather than an analogue dial means you land exactly on frequency, and ten presets - five AM and five FM - put your regular stations one button away.
3-inch full-range driver
A single 3-inch full-range driver at 4 ohms, which is a genuinely large speaker for a portable of this size - it fills a kitchen rather than sounding like a phone.
Backlit LCD
A large backlit LCD shows frequency, preset and clock clearly from across a room, and stays readable in a dim bedroom.
Dual alarm with HWS
Two independent alarms - so two people can be woken at different times - with Sangean's Humane Wake System, which ramps the volume gradually instead of jolting you awake, and a choice of buzzer or radio.
Sleep and snooze timers
A sleep timer switches the radio off after you have dropped off, and snooze buys you the extra few minutes in the morning.
Mains or four D cells
Runs from the included DC 6 V adapter at home, or on four 1.5 V D batteries when there is no socket - a real advantage in a shed, a garden or a power cut.
Battery power indicator
A battery status indicator tells you where you stand before the radio starts fading, rather than after.
Aux-in and headphone out
AC-in, DC-in and a stereo earphone jack, so you can listen privately or feed in another source.
